Work Injuries

How WSIB rehab works

WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) supports treatment and recovery for eligible workplace injuries and illnesses in Ontario. While each claim is different, WSIB care typically centers on three things:

  • Assessment-led treatment: Your plan is built around what’s driving your symptoms and what your job requires.
  • Progress tracking: Your provider tracks functional improvement (not just pain) and adjusts the planbased on response.
  • Return-to-work focus: Rehab aims to restore safe work capacity and support an appropriate return-to-work approach.

Important: This page is general information and not legal advice. WSIB eligibility and coverage depend on your claim and WSIB’s decisions.

What happens at your first WSIB assessment

Your first visit is designed to give you clarity and a practical plan. Expect:

1) History + mechanism of injury

We’ll discuss how the injury happened, what aggravates or eases symptoms, your job duties, and any restrictions. If you have paperwork (claim number, forms, notes), bring it.

2) Functional assessment

We assess movement, strength, range of motion, nerve involvement (when relevant), and the specific tasks your job demands (lifting, carrying, overhead work, standing tolerance, repetitive motions, etc.).

3) Diagnosis-informed plan (focused on function)

You’ll leave knowing:

  • What is most likely driving the problem (in plain language)
  • What we’ll do in-clinic and what you’ll do at home
  • How we’ll measure progress and adjust the plan
  • How rehab ties to your work demands and a return-to-work path

4) Early treatment + home program

When appropriate, the first visit includes hands-on care and a starter home program. We prioritize steps that reduce irritability and help you move safely right away.

What Does Therapy Include?

WSIB work injuries often respond best to a balanced plan: targeted hands-on treatment to improve comfort and mobility, plus progressive exercise and movement retraining to restore long-term capacity.

Early phase: calm symptoms + restore basic movement

  • Education on safe movement and pacing
  • Manual therapy for stiffness and tissue sensitivity (when appropriate)
  • Gentle mobility work and graded exposure to activity
  • Strategies to reduce flare-ups at work and at home

Build phase: strength, control, and tolerance

  • Progressive strengthening based on your job demands
  • Stability and movement retraining (core/hip/shoulder mechanics, etc.)
  • Ergonomics guidance for repetitive or sustained positions
  • Conditioning to improve work tolerance (standing, lifting, carrying)

Return-to-work phase: job-specific rehab

  • Work simulation (lifting patterns, overhead tasks, pushing/pulling)
  • Capacity building (endurance + strength that matches your role)
  • Return-to-work planning support (modified duties where needed)

Depending on your needs, care may involve a multidisciplinary approach using services such as:

We focus on what improves outcomes: a clear plan, consistent progression, and meaningful functional milestones.

How Do I Get Started With Therapy?

Starting WSIB-covered physiotherapy is easy. Follow these simple steps to report your injury, file your claim, and begin treatment at Toronto Wellness & Physio Center with a personalized recovery plan.

  • Report Your Injury to Your Employer
Let your employer know about your work-related injury. They are responsible for filing WSIB Form 7 and starting the claim process.

  • Seek Medical Attention
Visit your family doctor or come directly to our clinic for an assessment. A medical professional will confirm the nature of your injury and recommend physiotherapy if needed.

  • Complete WSIB Form 6
As the injured worker, you must complete Form 6, which describes how the injury occurred and the symptoms you’re experiencing. This form is necessary for WSIB to process your claim.

  • Book an Appointment With Us
Once your injury is reported and your forms are completed, contact Toronto Wellness & Physio Center to schedule your initial physiotherapy assessment. We also assist with paperwork and claim coordination.

  • Start Your Personalized Treatment Plan
After your assessment, our physiotherapist will design a recovery plan tailored to your injury, job duties, and goals. Treatment begins right away, and we handle progress reports directly with WSIB to ensure continuous support

Types of Workplace Injuries

Workplace injuries can range from mild to severe and may occur suddenly or develop gradually over time. At Toronto Wellness & Physio Center, we treat a wide variety of work-related injuries covered by WSIB, helping individuals return to work safely and with confidence. Below are the most common types of workplace injuries we see and treat:

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs)

RSIs are caused by repetitive tasks, awkward positions, or overuse of certain muscles and joints. These injuries typically develop over time and are common in office jobs, factory work, and occupations involving repetitive hand or arm motions.
Examples include:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Tendonitis

  • Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow

  • Rotator cuff strain

These injuries occur when muscles or ligaments are stretched or torn, often during heavy lifting or sudden movements. They’re common in physically demanding jobs like construction, warehousing, or healthcare.
Common areas affected:

  • Lower back

  • Shoulders

  • Legs

Poor posture, improper lifting techniques, or prolonged sitting or standing can lead to serious spine-related issues. Back and neck injuries are among the leading causes of long-term work-related disability.
Conditions may include:

  • Herniated discs

  • Chronic neck pain

  • Sciatica

  • Whiplash injuries

These are some of the most common workplace accidents and can result in anything from mild bruising to serious fractures or head injuries. They often occur in workplaces with wet floors, cluttered walkways, or uneven surfaces.
Possible injuries:

  • Ankle sprains

  • Hip fractures

  • Wrist fractures

  • Concussions

Jobs that require repetitive bending, kneeling, or lifting can place excessive stress on joints, causing inflammation or damage.
Frequently affected joints:

  • Knees

  • Shoulders

  • Elbows

These occur when an employee is struck by a falling object, caught in equipment, or involved in a vehicle-related incident at work.
Injuries may include:

  • Head trauma

  • Broken bones

  • Crush injuries

Also known as cumulative trauma disorder, OOS results from repeated microtrauma to muscles, tendons, and nerves due to prolonged or repetitive activity without proper rest.
Symptoms include:

  • Dull aches

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Decreased strength or coordination

At Toronto Wellness & Physio Center, we assess your injury thoroughly and develop a personalized WSIB treatment plan to reduce pain, restore function, and support a full return to your daily work duties. If you’ve experienced a workplace injury, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
