Compression Stockings 1

What are compression stockings?

Compression stockings are specially designed elastic garments that apply controlled pressure to the legs, ankles, and feet to improve blood flow, reduce swelling, and prevent discomfort. They are commonly used to manage conditions like varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), edema, and chronic venous insufficiency.

By gently squeezing the legs, compression stockings help support vein function, prevent blood from pooling, and reduce the risk of clot formation. They’re also beneficial for people who sit or stand for long periods, are recovering from surgery, or have circulation-related health concerns.

At Toronto Wellness & Physio Center, we offer custom orthotics and custom-fitted compression stockings to ensure maximum comfort, effectiveness, and support for your daily activities and long-term vascular health.

Benefits of Compression Stockings

Compression stockings offer a range of health and wellness benefits by improving blood circulation and reducing pressure on the veins. At Toronto Wellness & Physio Center, we provide custom-fitted compression stockings to ensure comfort, effectiveness, and proper support for your daily needs.

  • Improves Blood Circulation – Helps veins carry blood back to the heart more efficiently.

  • Reduces Swelling (Edema) – Minimizes fluid buildup in the legs, ankles, and feet.

  • Prevents Varicose & Spider Veins – Supports vein health and reduces the risk of vein enlargement.

  • Relieves Leg Pain & Fatigue – Eases heaviness, aching, and tiredness, especially after long hours of standing or sitting.

  • Supports Recovery After Surgery – Helps reduce the risk of blood clots and supports healing.

  • Prevents Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) – Encourages healthy blood flow, particularly during travel or immobility.

What We Treat With Compression Stockings

At Toronto Wellness & Physio Center, our custom-fitted compression stockings are used to manage and relieve a variety of circulatory and vascular conditions affecting the legs. These medical-grade garments provide targeted pressure to support healthy blood flow and reduce discomfort.

Varicose Veins & Spider Veins

Compression stockings help reduce pain, swelling, and heaviness associated with varicose and spider veins. By improving blood flow and decreasing pressure in the veins, they can prevent the worsening of visible veins and alleviate related symptoms.

CVI occurs when vein valves in the legs don’t function properly, leading to pooling of blood and leg discomfort. Compression stockings support vein function by promoting upward blood flow, which reduces aching, throbbing, and skin changes over time.

Whether caused by long hours of standing, sitting, pregnancy, or underlying conditions, edema can lead to discomfort and skin damage. Compression helps to reduce fluid buildup, minimize swelling, and improve overall leg comfort and appearance.

Compression stockings are commonly used after surgery, during travel, or in those with limited mobility to help prevent blood clots in the deep veins of the legs. By maintaining steady circulation, they reduce the risk of life-threatening clots and promote vascular health.

After certain surgeries—especially orthopedic or vascular procedures—compression stockings help manage swelling, reduce the risk of clotting, and support faster, safer recovery by promoting healthy blood flow and reducing pressure on healing tissues.

If you spend long hours on your feet or sitting, you may experience tired, aching legs at the end of the day. Compression stockings help by improving circulation, reducing muscle fatigue, and keeping your legs energized and supported throughout the day.

What to Expect When You Visit for Compression Stockings (North York & Richmond Hill)

When you book an appointment at Toronto Wellness & Physio Center, the goal is simple: make sure your compression stockings fit properly, feel comfortable, and match your needs.

Here’s what typically happens:

1) Quick check-in + symptom review
We’ll ask about your goals and symptoms (leg swelling, heaviness, varicose veins, travel, standing at work, post-procedure support, etc.), and review any prescription details if you have one (compression level and length).

2) Proper leg measurements (the most important part)
You’ll be measured for the correct size and length (knee-high, thigh-high, or pantyhose). Measurements are usually best in the morning when swelling is lowest, but we can still help if you’re coming later in the day.

3) Choose the right compression level + style
Based on your needs and comfort, we’ll help you select:

  • Compression level (mmHg)
  • Length (knee-high vs thigh-high)
  • Material (everyday, breathable, warmer fabric, etc.)
  • Open-toe vs closed-toe

Best option for work, travel, pregnancy, or recovery (when appropriate)

4) Try-on + comfort check
You’ll try them on (or we’ll guide you through it) to confirm they feel supportive without being painful, numb, or too tight. If anything feels off, we adjust sizing or style.

5) How to wear them (easy tips)
You’ll get clear instructions on:

  • When to put them on and take them off
  • How long to wear them daily
  • How to avoid rolling/slipping
  • How to wash and care for them
  • Simple tools that make them easier to put on (if needed)

6) Insurance paperwork support (if needed)
If your plan requires documents, we’ll guide you on what insurers commonly ask for (prescription details, compression level, and itemized receipt requirements).

7) Follow-up if the fit doesn’t feel right
If they slip, roll, pinch, or feel uncomfortable after a few wears, a re-check can help confirm sizing, style, or compression level is right for you.

Compression Stockings FAQs

Many extended health plans in Ontario require a prescription to reimburse compression stockings. Some insurers also ask for specific compression level (mmHg), diagnosis, and an itemized receipt. If you’re unsure, check your plan requirements before purchase so you get the paperwork you need.

Compression is usually chosen based on your symptoms, circulation needs, and medical history. Common ranges include light (often 15–20 mmHg), moderate (20–30 mmHg), and higher levels (30–40 mmHg). If you’ve been prescribed a level by your doctor, follow that. If not, an in-person fitting can help you choose an option that’s supportive but still comfortable for daily wear.

Sizing is based on measurements (not just shoe size). Typically, you’ll measure the ankle, calf, and sometimes the thigh, plus leg length for the correct height (knee-high vs thigh-high). Measurements are often best taken in the morning when swelling is lowest. Proper sizing helps prevent slipping, rolling, and discomfort.

Most people wear compression stockings during the day and remove them before bed. They’re commonly put on in the morning and worn through work, errands, or travel. Sleeping in compression stockings is usually not recommended unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to.

They should feel snug and supportive, especially around the ankle, but they should not cause sharp pain, numbness, tingling, or skin discoloration. If you notice persistent discomfort, deep marks, cold toes, or increased pain, the size or compression level may be wrong. Stop using them and get re-checked for fit.

For easier application, make sure your skin is dry, use rubber grip gloves, and gently work the stocking up in sections (don’t yank from the top). A donning aid can help if you have limited hand strength or mobility. Most compression stockings gradually lose strength with regular wear and washing, so if they start slipping, rolling, or feeling “looser,” it may be time to replace them.
